The centre will focus on product development in agriculture, food, green biotechnology, bioprospecting, genomics and bioinformatics sectors. It will be equipped with world class infrastructure. “The main aim will be to strengthen biotechnology research and education. This centre will also become a hub for TNAU to interlink with other academic and research institutes in the state and abroad for research collaborations,” a statement from the university said.

Since the centre is being funded by private companies and philanthropists, it will work as an autonomous organization or a section 8 company within the TNAU umbrella. “While the centre will have its own staff and management, the university will only be carrying out research in the centre,” said TNAU vice-chancellor K Ramasamy. “Since the budget has come through, work on centre will start soon,” he said.

“The centre is expected to act as a public-private platform for research, incubation and commercialization of highly productive crop varieties, super active enzymes and biomolecules, bio-based products, hormones for fruit ripening, plant growth stimulants and similar bio-inputs for the commercial benefit of farmers,” said a TNAU official.

The facility will be established on an area of five acres with all necessary infrastructure and equipment, said the statement. The long-term vision of the centre is to sustain on its own resources and get elevated to the status of a bioscience cluster in Coimbatore.
