Apex defeated Clayton’s straight sets to remain unbeaten Saturday night in the HighschoolOT Garner Showcase.

The Comets took control of the match early with a 7-1 run but the Cougars responded with a 9-3 run to even the first set at 10-10. The teams kept the set close as the score was tied at 24 but Apex scores two straight to win the first set 26-24.

The second set was just as close but Apex had to come from behind to win. Clayton held a 21-18 lead but the Cougars ended the set on a 7-2 run to win 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead over the Comets.

“Honestly that’s what they do,” Apex head coach Michael Webster said about his team coming from behind. “They put themselves in a hole but they come out of it.”

Apex did not have to comeback in the third set. The Cougars started the final set on a 7-0 run and never relinquished the lead in the set as Apex won the last set 25-17.

Apex will take on Green Hope at home on Monday night and Clayton will host Heritage on Wednesday night.
