MOHALI: A Kharar-based de-addiction centre was found not maintaining any record of medicines it had been selling to patients, prompting the authorities to cancel its licence and suspect a nexus with chemists.
The centre situated in Garden Colony sold around Rs 1 lakh medicines daily and had an OPD (out patient department) of over 100 patients, but it did not keep an OPD register. No record pertaining to name of patients, drugs dispensed and doctors’ prescription were recorded at the Abuse Monitoring System (DAMS) form. The action came following a raid conducted by deputy commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra.

“On the basis of a report submitted by the district administration regarding de-addiction and re-rehabilitation centres operational in the district, director, health and family welfare, has cancelled the licence of Kharar-based Dr Sidhu De-addiction Centre on Saturday. We are checking if chemists were selling drugs which cannot be sold outside de-addiction centres. It was learnt that around Rs 1 lakh de-addiction drugs were being sold at the centre without prescription. This hints at a nexus between officials of the private de-addiction centre and chemists.”

The DC also conducted a raid at chemist shop in vicinity of the de-addiction centres and found that such drugs meant to be sold at the centres only were stocked in it. Similarly, no record of sale of these medicines was maintained. The chemist was also found selling such drugs without doctors’ prescription.

The DC said various irregularities had been found at the de-addiction centre during a checking conducted last month. Sapra said all drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centres of the district were directed to maintain proper record regarding registration of drug victims.

The DC said instructions had been already issued to all drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centres of the district to follow the directions of Punjab Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Rehabilitation (PSDTR) and counselling center rules, 2011 and directions issued by Punjab government regarding the operations of private drug de-addiction centres strictly.
