Cardinal Gibbons cruised to its third win on the season with a straight set victory over reigning 2A state champions Carrboro on Saturday night at the HighschoolOT Garner Showcase.
Carrboro started out the match strong. The Jaguars claimed a 10-5 lead early on Gibbons but the Crusaders cut away at the deficit and won the set 25-22.
“We needed to focus on what we could do and not the other side,” Cardinal Gibbons head coach Logan Barber said postgame. “We were a little rusty but we just kept playing and things worked themselves out.”
Cardinal Gibbons carried the momentum from the first set for the remainder of the match. The Crusaders dominated the second set 25-16 behind great all-around play.
In the third set Carrboro took an early lead but a huge run by Cardinal Gibbons in the middle of the set allowed the Crusaders to take command and win the final set 25-14.
Gibbons improves to 3-1 on the season, and has a strong chance to compete for its eighth Volleyball state championship in school history.
“It is certainly possible to win another one, if we keep working hard and putting ourselves in the right place, I think we have a shot,” Barber said.
The Crusaders return to the court to take on Broughton on Wednesday night. Carrboro’s next game is against Bartlett Yancey on Tuesday night.
