The D.H. Conley Vikings overcame a loss in the first set of their contest against the Chapel Hill Tigers and swept the next three sets to claim a 3-1 victory in the penultimate match of the HighSchoolOT Garner Volleyball Showcase.
The Vikings lacked the height that the Tigers possessed in the front line, but they out-battled the opposition and were very effective in executing tough digs.
The two teams played to a 12-12 draw through the first half of the first set before the Tigers used their skill near the net to land some big points and take the lead with a 25-20 win.
But it was all Vikings after the first set.
The second saw D.H. Conley dominate, as they went on several runs and won the set 25-14.
The third set was more tightly contested, with Chapel Hill going on a run to trim a 20-13 deficit to a 20-19 deficit. The Vikings were able to bear down and hold the lead, taking the set 25-22.
After the Vikings got out to a 7-3 lead in the fourth set, the Tigers staged their last gasp effort to get back into the contest. An 8-1 run saw them take an 11-8 lead, but they ran out of gas, as the Vikings came back and earned the victory with a 25-23 advantage.
