Any celebration is incomplete without , cookies and other sweet delights. While there are ample options available for humans, there are very few for our furry friends. Whether it’s a birthday or a good day at the dog boarding – till a year back, pet parents in the city didn’t have many options to mark their furry friends’ special days. So they took matters in their own hands. Many pet parents with baking skills in NCR researched ingredients that are safe for their and started baking yummy treats for them. While some started their venture to make their own pets happy, others joined in as they saw it as a business opportunity. The growing popularity of desserts for pets is not only limited to just cakes, and bakers are making customised cupcakes and ice creams as well.
CUTIES FOR THE BEAUTIES!
Gluten-free, sugar-free cakes for pets
Bakers specializing in pet desserts tell us that they stick to natural ingredients and avoid artificial preservatives, salt, sugar, and chocolate. Some even make gluten-free alternatives. Himani Lohia, who runs Bark & Treat-Canine Bakery in Gurgaon, tells us, “When we prepare cakes for pets, we try to add as many natural ingredients as possible. We use yogurt, homemade peanut butter and pumpkin for these cakes. We do not add sugar or chocolate as it is harmful for pets. We have several interesting flavours to offer, including red velvet, coconut butter and barbeque.”
NOM NOM: Chicken and cupcakes
Yashika Arora from Paw Petisserie, Delhi, says, “We prepare treats that are gluten-free and without salt, sugar or any artificial preservatives. We use oat flour, apple sauce, peanut butter, carrots or pumpkin puree to make pet-special cakes. We even offer ice creams in different flavours, including strawberry, blueberry and sweet potato. Chicken is something that pets really love. All our icing is homemade and that is why our cakes are usually red or pink in colour. We prepare these cakes using yogurt, fruits and vegetables.”
Rashmi Prasad from Paw Pie in Gurgaon tells us, “We specialise in cakes that can be enjoyed by humans as well as their pets. While one half of the cake is prepared for humans, the other half is for pets. Each ingredient in the pet dessert is used after checking with a veterinarian.”
Pet-friendly cakes a hit
Pet parents have their own set of queries before placing orders. Yashika, who gets 30-35 orders in a month, adds, “Before placing orders, pet parents ask the ingredients and flavours of these cakes. We ask them if their pet is allergic to any specific ingredient or if it likes any particular flavour, so that we can customise accordingly.”
Mayank Gupta from Pet Connect, Gurgaon, who gets 50-55 orders in a month for pet desserts, says, “Earlier, pet parents didn’t have options to get dessert for their furry friends. But now, with several bakeries across NCR specialising in such desserts, people have started ordering pet-friendly cakes.”

‘Ordered paw-shaped cupcakes for my pets’
Poorvaja Kumar, a resident of Sarvodaya Enclave, says, “I had organised a pool party for my pets this year and we ordered paw-shaped cupcakes for them. I am very particular about what I feed my pets, so I asked about all the ingredients that were being used to prepare the treats. Most bakers who specialise in cakes for pets are pet parents themselves and are conscious of what they are putting in these desserts.”
Richa Goswami, a resident of Sector 67, Gurgaon, regularly orders cakes and biscuits for her pets. She says, “When I ordered a cake for my pets for the first time, my baker spoke to me for two hours and explained all the ingredients that were being used to make it. People now want to pamper their pets with desserts and treats without compromising on their health.”
