Dist admin gets 7,370 EVMs before LS polls

Coimbatore: The district administration has received 7,370 electronic voting machines (EVMs) and 4,000 control units from the Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru. The officials said they will receive 4,000 more verifiable paper audit trial (VVPAT) units on September 1 from BEL. The officials said they will use VVPAT devices for two parliament constituencies in the upcoming LS election.
The district has ten assembly constituencies – Mettupalayam, Sulur, Kavundampalayam, Coimbatore North, Thondamuthur, Coimbatore South, Singanallur, Kinathukadavu, Pollachi and Valparai. It will release the draft electoral roll on September 1.

Meanwhile, the 7,370 EVMs and all other machines were kept at the office of the deputy director of health department at Race Course.

According to sources, the district needs only 4,000 EVMs, but the BEL has provided more than 7,000 EVMs (ballot units). During the parliament and assembly elections, the EVMs will be sent to some neighbouring districts.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) used M1 type EVMs from 1989 – 2006 and M2 type EVMs from 2006 -2013. It has introduced M3 type machines from 2013 to ensure safety, an official said. He also added the VVPAT units will be attached to the ballot units. This will bring transparency in the working of the EVMs.

The district administration is planning to increase the polling booths to more than 3,100 from 2,900. Its detailed report will be sent to the ECI for approval. After getting a nod from the ECI, the details of the additional polling booths will be published.
