The M6 has been closed in both directions after a man jumped the railings this morning.
The police incident has sparked travel chaos for drivers trying to get away at the start of Bank Holiday weekend.
West Midlands Police told Metro that a police negotiator is still at the scene after the man was spotted by drivers on the wrong side of bridge railings over the motorway just before 6.40am.
It prompted police to close the M6 in both directions at junction 10 near Wolverhampton.
Drivers are being diverted around the incident on slip roads in an ‘up and over’ closure.
But it has caused long tailbacks and hour-long delays for drivers.
A police spokesman said: ‘Officers were alerted to a man standing on the wrong side of bridge railings above junction 10 of the M6 at just before 6.40am this morning.
‘The motorway has been closed and a specialist negotiator is attending the scene.
‘Motorists are asked to find alternative routes in the meantime.’
Many of the drivers are football fans using the M6 ahead of the 12.30pm kick off between Wolves and Man City.
It’s also affecting rugby league fans travelling south to Wembley to watch the Challenge Cup Final between the Catalan Dragons and Warrington.
Highways England West Midlands tweeted: ‘The #M6 is closed in both directions at J10 due to a Police incident.
‘Traffic is diverted via the exit and entry slip roads in an ‘up and over’ closure around the junction.
‘Please allow plenty of extra time if travelling in the area. Long delays both ways. #Walsall’
It later added: ‘#RoadtoWembley Heading to today for the #RugbyLeagueChallengeCupFinal?
‘Pls be aware of 60 minute delays on the M6 s/bound btwn J11+ J10 due to a Police incident.’
