A man has been jailed for three years after he hacked off his ex-girlfriend’s hair and threatened to poison her children.
Darren Rudd, 30, made his victim’s life ‘hell’ for more than a year.
At one point she was so terrified that he would kill her that she wrote a letter she hoped police would find if he killed her.
While she was pregnant, Rudd even sent vile messages about their unborn child to her, even texting her on Christmas Day to say he hoped she would never make it out of the labour room when she gave birth.
The night before she had her first scan he sent her pictures of babies with deformities and said her child would look like them because ‘she had slept with her father’.
Newcastle Crown Court heard he ‘controlled every aspect of her life’ and left her feeling stripped of her femininity when he hacked off her hair using a knife.
Prosecutor Joe Hedworth told the court: ‘Their baby boy was asleep in the same room. She was terrified. He tried to snap her phone and slapped her across the face.
‘She tried to get him out of the room away from the baby and at that stage he threw the mobile phone at the television, next to the baby, and the TV smashed.
‘He then threw her in the living room and kicked and punched her. She curled up in a ball.
‘He dragged her in the kitchen by the hair and shouted he was going to cut her hair off and said he was getting the scissors.
‘He was pulling her so hard she thought her neck was going to snap.
‘He slapped her in the face. He found the scissors and cut her hair. She attempted to fight him off.
‘He punched her to the side of the head.
‘He pinned her down and hacked at her hair with the knife.
‘He held a knife to her throat and said “It’s game over you shit”.’
‘She felt herself drifting in and out of consciousness as he said “It’s game over now, you are going to die” and “When you are dead I’m going to poison the kids.”‘
Rudd then demanded the woman’s passwords and tried to transfer thousands of pounds from her online bank account into his own but grew angry when he failed then threatened to burn the house down.
The woman has said she felt let down by criminal justice system and cannot understand how he got away with his bullying behaviour for so long.
In a victim impact statement she said: ‘I feel massively let down by the courts and CPS.
‘He repeatedly breached his bail conditions, causing me to live in fear daily.
‘I would like the justice system to look at my case and learn from it.
‘The worst feeling was when he pinned me down and told me he was going to kill my children. I think about it every day.
‘He has destroyed my life.’
Rudd, from North Tyneside, pleaded guilty to controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship, between June 2016 and August 2017.
The charge was only created in 2015 meaning prior to this the offence was not a crime. It now carries a sentence of up to five years.
Mr recorder Eric Elliott QC issued Rudd with a lifelong restraining order to keep Rudd away from the victim.
