JAIPUR: The noise of rebels that reverberated on the campus of Rajasthan University two days ago has now mellowed down. Most of the rebels who filed nominations independently for the post of president have withdrawn their names. On Monday morning, 14 candidates filed nominations for president’s post of RU but by the end of the day only six were left. Similarly, in the final list for the post of vice-president, seven candidates are contesting, for the post of general secretary there are eight candidates and for joint secretary post too eight candidates are contesting the elections. With the state assembly elections this year, no party is ready to take any risk, hence, all the rebel leaders of ABVP backed out at the last moment.

In 2017, rebel leader of ABVP, Pawan Yadav defeated the presidential candidate of the party, Sanjay Machedi, with more than 2,600 votes. Similarly, in 2016, Ankit Dhayal, the rebel leader defeated Akhilesh Pareek with more than 5,000 votes.

The ABVP party workers have accepted the fact that student election results can affect the mood of public during the state elections. Though Amit Badbadwal was a strong contender for the post of president in Rajasthan University elections, he backed out and will be in charge of election campaigning of Rajpal Choudhary, the man he opposed two days back. When asked about the reason he said, “We are a family. I had some issues earlier but now I will support my party in winning the election this year.”

NSUI had won the post of president in 2014 and 2015 but ABVP has not been able to win any seat since BJP came into power in 2013. At present rebels of NSUI have continued with the nominations. As per the norms, this year out of six, four candidates are from Jat community. It has been a norm to give tickets to Jat or Meena community candidates to lure the voters in the university.

ABVP released its manifesto on Monday with 35 points. Out of all the 35 points, majority points of last year are repeated. With ABVP rebel candidates backing out, the party is considered to perform better this election.
