Porvorim cops catch minors drinking, ask them to clean up trash

PANAJI: The police on Sunday caught two minors drinking at a spot near the pond at Torda at Salvador do Mundo and ordered them to clear the mess of dumped bottles and other litter from the spot.
The incident went viral on social media, where the action of the men in uniform was appreciated.

The problem of people drinking in public and then littering the area with empty bottles and shards from broken ones, besides other waste, is one that will find an echo with citizens all over the state. Add to this the nuisance of noisy, rowdy behavior and you understand what the residents of Surla are protesting. Public drinking is a punishable offence, which authorities have failed to clamp down on. Goa police should seriously look at replicating this novel method of disciplining and deterring miscreants.

During a gram sabha meeting, villagers raised the issue of drinking and littering at the pond and said youths visit the area at night and dump liquor bottles and waste by the roadside.

The issue had been raised earlier, too, and were asked to conduct patrolling. But no action had been taken.

The villagers raised the issue with Porvorim police inspector Paresh Naik.

While returning from the gram sabha, the police inspector found two minors sitting near the pond and drinking. He immediately caught the duo and asked them to clean the area. It took the boys about 30 minutes to fill three sacks with all the trash from the area.

Naik then asked them to put the three sacks in their personal vehicle and drop them at a nearby waste bin. “We followed them till they dropped the in a bin,” Naik told TOI.

Another person was booked at the same place at night for drinking and littering. Naik said of the three persons found drinking at the pond, one was booked and two were let off as they were minors.

“We have constituted a special team under sub-inspector Sajith Pillai and head constable Sandeep Bhosale to act against those drinking and littering any public place that falls under Porvorim police station jurisdiction,” he said.

In a Facebook post, Ravalnath temple committee president Sagun Sastikar said, “Platform where these people drink and throw bottles is our Ganesh visarjan place. Thanks for taking care of the place at the right time… Support India police.”

Mustak Ahmed Javed, who uploaded the photos of policemen asking people to clean up the garbage, wrote, “Good initiative by Porvorim PI Paresh Naik. Caught red-handed boys drinking and littering along our Salvador do Mundo creek. As a punishment, got the stretch cleaned through the same boys. Kudos to Porvorim police.”
