BNSF Railway authorities hope to have a portion of train tracks damaged Tuesday when near Cajon Boulevard and Devore Road in San Bernardino repaired by Wednesday evening.

“We have been working through the night to safely repair the tracks and resume service for our customers,” Lena Kent, spokeswoman for the railway said Wednesday.

The cause is still under investigation, she said.

The derailment caused two tankers to leak which prompted the evacuation of several buildings and causing at least one school to shelter in place, authorities said. They were plugged by mid-afternoon.

One tanker leaked petroleum distillate, Kent said, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention described as a colorless liquid with a gasoline-type odor that can irritate eyes, noses and throats and cause dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea and cracked skin.

The second tanker leaked detergent, officials said.

No injuries were reported, and there was no fire. In addition to the 13 tanker cars, one boxcar derailed in the 7200 block of Cajon Boulevard.
